Gay Suicide Awareness

Julia Newman

Since the beginning of the 2010, the number of homophobic bullying related suicides has increased. This has sparked a national movement to raise awareness, including several announcements made by celebrities such as Tim Gunn, Ke$ha, and Zachary Quinto, in a movement called “It Gets Better.” Many schools across the country are trying to create anti-bullying programs to provide further support. Some critics of these programs say there is a need to focus specifically on homosexuality, while others argue it is an attempt to sway people into being homosexual. Minnesota’s Anoka-Hennepin School District has reportedly received hate mail for considering a program regarding homosexual bullying.
