White House Accuses Chamber of Commerce
Joshua Fimbres
President Obama and his White House Press Corps have made the accusation that the Chamber of Commerce has been using foreign money to fund its political advertising campaign this election cycle. The Chamber of Commerce has unleashed a huge ad campaign to aid Republicans running for House, Senate, and Governors races in this midterm election. The Chamber of Commerce has committed to spending seventy-five million dollars. President Obama has questioned the legality of the funds allocated for their ad campaign, making the point that foreign funds are being used against Democrats running for office across the country. The Chamber admits that while it does accept foreign contributions, they are not a part of their issue advocacy campaigns. Bruce Josten, Executive Vice President of Government Relations claims that the Chamber of Commerce has 115 American Chambers abroad working with American businesses. Money derived from those sources are placed in a separate account and are not used to fund their ad campaign, which, again, he claims are not independent expenditures for candidates, but rather issue advocacy advertisements.
