The Hill

Republicans Ahead of Democrats in Most Recent Polls

Tess Wafelbakker

According to a poll conducted by The Hill 2010 Midterm Election organization, Republicans are beating Democrats in eight out of ten competitive open House seats. Last week, The Hill conducted a poll that found Republicans winning nineteen out of twenty-two races, with Democrats only winning one and tying another. These poll numbers confirm what many analysts and pundits have speculated for months leading up to the upcoming November 2nd Congressional midterm elections. Although many of the races are tight – according to The Hill twelve of the twenty-two races are still within the margin of error – the margins favor the GOP. Republicans are taking over some historically Democratic seats, including Arkansas’ first congressional district, which has been held by Democrats for nearly a century but now shows a Republican lead. This new direction may be an indication of President Obama’s popularity, with his current ratings under fifty percent amongst voters of all ages. The most recent Gallup poll has Obama’s approval rating at forty-five percent. Even more disheartening is the current Congress’ approval rating, with seventy-two percent of likely voters disapproving of the job it is currently doing.
