The Candidates for Lieutenant Governor of California
Joshua Fimbres
The choices facing Californians for the role of Lieutenant Governor are Gavin Newsom (Democrat) and Abel Maldonado (Republican). The office of lieutenant governor consists partly of sitting on the UC Board of Regents, CSU Board of Trustees, Ocean Protection Council, the California Emergency Council, and the State Lands Commission. The Lieutenant Governor of California also chairs the Commission for Economic Development, which is responsible for fostering economic growth in California by developing and implementing strategies for attracting new business to the state, increasing state exports, creating new jobs, and stimulating industries statewide.
- Abel Maldonado: Began his political career as in the City of Santa Maria as a councilman at the age of twenty-six in 1996. Served as mayor of Santa Maria until 1998 and on the State Assembly. Appointed and confirmed as Lieutenant Governor of California.
- Gavin Newsom: Was an appointee to the San Francisco parking and traffic commission in 1996. Elected to the city’s Board of Supervisors. In 2002, Newsom was elected as Mayor of San Francisco where he began granting gay marriage licenses He still serves as mayor of San Francisco and hopes to unseat Abel Maldonado.
