LASUD Layoffs
Emmett McOsker
On Tuesday, October 5th, the Los Angeles Board of Education unanimously approved a landmark legal settlement Tuesday that could end the district's practice of making layoff decisions strictly on the basis of seniority. This deal would protect up to 45 LAUSD schools from suffering any further layoffs due to budget cuts, according to district officials. During this massive budget crisis, the city of Los Angeles has been forced to reduce spending across the board furthering the longtime issues of underfunding and overcrowding in city schools. The agreement would also cap the number of teacher dismissals at virtually all schools in the nation's second largest school district (California) – assuring that no school loses more teachers than the district average. The proposed settlement, which requires approval by a judge, lays out one of the most sweeping reforms to teacher layoffs in the nation, which generally follow a "last hired, first fired" approach.
- Layoffs: LAUSD's current method of laying teachers off due to budget constraints is characterized by a “last hired, first fired” policy – protecting teachers with higher seniority and ignoring other performance related issues.
- LAUSD: Los Angeles Unified School District has long suffered from underfunding and overcrowding, an issue compounded by the state and city's budget deficits.
- New agreement: Would adjust the current layoff policy to include criteria other than seniority, and would reduce the total number of teacher layoffs in an attempt to provide fair and equal education throughout all LAUSD schools.
