ElECTION SPECIAL

Mckenzee McCammack

With the gubernatorial election fast approaching, some of the key issues are education, job creation, and immigration. However, more research should be done to completely understand the issues.

Meg Whitman:

  • Education: Ensures grants and education bonds are distributed more generally to the students so that the funding cannot be taken by government administrators; to stop grants being duplicated; to ensure good teachers are rewarded.
  • Create jobs: Eliminate small-business tax to promote small business growth, increase the research and development grant (something promoted by Obama as of this September; see Huffington Post website), and promote investment in the agricultural industry.
  • Immigration: “Economic Fence” to enforce harsh punishment for employers who employ illegal immigrants; deploy the National Guard; Prohibit drivers’ licenses for undocumented workers; Encourage English immersion.

Jerry Brown:

  • Education: Focus on charter schools and community colleges; shift the focus of education from testing to career readiness; additional funding to English-learners and low-income families; create a more balanced and creative school curriculum.
  • Create Jobs: Investment in renewable energy and raising efficiency standards, by 2020; create 12,000 megawatts of localized energy; increase in building efficiency and appliances; develop energy storage.
  • Immigration: Supports prohibiting drivers’ licenses for undocumented workers; supports the DREAM Act.

  • DREAM Act: Allows students who serve in the military or go to college to be granted citizenship.
