California’s Budget

Alfredo Camacho

California lawmakers passed an $87.5 billion budget on Friday October 8th, 100 days past its intended due date, which makes it the latest budget in California history.
The new budget, which aims to fix the $19 billion deficit, includes no new taxes but does include pension reforms that were said to be one of the causes for California's budget problems. The budget was passed with a two-thirds vote in California State Senate and Assembly. California is one of three states that require a supermajority, which officials say is one of the reasons for the delay. Some of the spending cuts in the budget include those to the education and prison systems, as well as reductions in human services.
The governor is expected to sign the new budget Friday.

  • Deficit: Debt
  • Supermajority: 50% plus one more vote
