On Monday, April 5th, 2010 in Peshwar, Pakistan the U.S. Consulate was attacked by at least five suicide bombers using a car bomb, rocket launchers, and machine guns according to both Pakistani and American officials in the most direct attack on an American facility in Pakistan since 2002. While no Americans were hurt, at least 6 Pakistanis were killed and 20 were wounded. While the militants did not breach the perimeter of the compound, part of an exterior wall was destroyed. The attack came just hours after at least 43 people were killed in suicide attack at a political party rally in northwest Pakistan. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack through an announcement by Azam Tariq, and stated that the attack was a response to Pakistani military operations in western areas that border Afghanistan and for American missile strikes that have killed militants over the past few months. Although militants have targeted Americans in the past, the tactics used in this attack were new and resembled those used last year against Pakistanis.
- Azam Tariq: the primary spokesperson for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan
- Argument for: The war on terror must continue to remove groups such as the Pakistani Taliban, who continue to target the US and the Pakistan government
- Argument against: The war on terror could lose further support as it continues to last and more lives are lost.
