Justice Steven Ponders Retirement

Julia Newman

In early March 2010 Justice Stevens said he would decide if he would retire in about a month’s time. Justice Stevens has served for 35 years, and will be turning 90 this month. If Justice Stevens retires, this will make it the second appointment President Obama will make to the Supreme Court. Last summer, the President appointed Sonia Sotomayor to the court. Justice Stevens has been a long time liberal leader, and it assumed the President Obama will fill his place with another liberal. Although there has been speculation as to his replacement, there appear to be no forerunner at this time.

  • If Justice Stevens retires, the Supreme Court will loose on of it’s most experienced members.
  • This comes at an interesting time, when many lawsuits against the healthcare bill are rising.
