Although it was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Mexico in almost 20 years, there appears to be minimal damage from the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that originated in Baja California, Mexico. Only two deaths have been reported so far. According to geophysicists, the destruction was significantly diminished due to the fact that the epicenter was in a remote part of Mexico, as opposed to the similar magnitude Haitian earthquake whose epicenter was in Port-au-Prince, a highly populated city. Although when compared to recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile the damage and lives lost is significantly less, the quake was still destructive, causing a parking structure in Mexicali to collapse and power outages in both Mexico and the U.S.
