LA County Jails Increase Early Release of Inmates

Jennifer Halligan

In the past week over 343 inmates were released early from Los Angeles County prisons. Starting last Tuesday, March 2, the LA County Sheriff’s Department began the release of non-violent offenders as part of the recent set of budget cuts. The new policy says that male inmates who were previously required to serve at least 80% of their sentence now only have to serve 50%. The department is also reducing deputy overtime and considering cutting over $128 million from its budget over the next 16 months.

  • Non-violent offenders: People who have committed crimes that did not cause physical or emotional pain, like petty theft or a DUI.
  • Argument for: The city should do everything possible to help with the budget crises, and because these are non-violent offenders, no one is put at risk.
  • Argument against: Criminals should get their just punishment, and just because they aren’t murderers doesn’t mean they won’t pose a threat to the community.
