Shooting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville
Paul Kadzielski
On Friday, February 12th, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a biology professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, killed three faculty members from the biology department and wounded three more faculty and staff members by firing a handgun. Bishop, a Harvard trained neurobiologist and inventor, had reportedly just been informed that she would not be receiving academic tenure, despite having taught at the university for ten years. She had complained previously of being treated unfairly in her pursuit of tenure. The shooting happened 30-40 minutes into a faculty meeting at the Shelby Center for Science and Technology on the UAH campus around 4pm. No students were harmed. Dr. Bishop did not resist arrest, and is currently in the custody of the Huntsville, Alabama police department.
